Subject: Mitochondrial metabolism in hematopoietic stem cell divisions
Abstract:
Most of the hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) within the bone marrow usually show quiescent state. By contrast, upon stress hematopoiesis, HSCs actively divide to regenerate hematopoietic system through the appropriate balance between self-renewal and differentiation divisions. However, it remains unclear how regulates self-renewal or differentiation divisions in HSCs during stress hematopoiesis. Previously, we demonstrated that mitochondrial activity is up-regulated prior to the initiation of HSC divisions after 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) administration (Umemoto et al., J Exp Med, 2018). In addition, we recently found that mitochondrial statuses in HSCs are drastically changed during stress hematopoiesis. Importantly, these differences seem to affect cell fate after HSC divisions. Collectively, our data indicate that mitochondrial metabolism plays a key role in the regulation of HSC division.
