EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations) は、欧州で研究開発を行う44の製薬企業と各国33の製薬団体からなる連合組織であり、欧州の2,200社の製薬企業を代表しています。EFPIAの使命は、すぐれた医薬品に対する患者さんの切実なる要望と期待に応えるべく、革新的な新薬の創出に向けた研究開発を促進することにあります。科学的基盤の強化に加え、イノベーションを促進する経済・規制・政策環境を整備することもEFPIAの重要な目標です。EFPIA-Japanは、日本での新薬の研究開発を促進する目的で、2002年に欧州域以外では始めて設立された活動拠点です。
現在、革新的な新薬の創出は、科学技術の進歩にもかかわらず、開発コストの増加や規制の強化ともあいまって、ますます困難な状況をむかえています。特に、日本では欧米に比べて新薬の投入が遅れがちであり、患者さんにとっては危急の問題です。本セミナーでは、これからの新薬開発をより活性化する上で取り組むべき課題、ならびにEFPIAが掲げる挑戦について紹介し、これからの研究開発戦略ならびに医薬品政策の将来像について議論したいと考えます。
一方、演者はこれまで、生物科学の基礎研究を出発点とし、製薬企業での創薬研究、組織マネージメント、医療政策、リーダーシップ開発、と自身の活動の場を広げてきました。こうした「キャリア」は、決して前もって計画したものではありませんでしたが、この中で一貫して大切にしてきたことは、それぞれの場で達成のための最大の力を使うこと、そして同時に自らの成長とともに自分が何を求めているのかを理解し、その方向に舵を切り直す決断をしたことです。これまでの演者の経験を紹介させていただき、セミナー参加者の方々の今後のキャリア形成の一助としていただければと考えます。
The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) represents the pharmaceutical industry operating in Europe. Through its direct membership of 31 national associations and 44 leading pharmaceutical companies, EFPIA is the voice on the EU scene of 2,200 companies committed to researching, developing and bringing to patients new medicines that will improve health and the quality of life around the world. EFPIA's mission is to promote pharmaceutical research and development in Europe as well as creating a favourable economic, regulatory and political environment, enabling the research-based pharmaceutical industry to meet the growing healthcare needs and expectations of patients. EFPIA Japan was established in 2002 to promote pharmaceutical R&D in Japan, which is comprised of 22 European research-based pharmaceutical companies operating in Japan.
Drug discovery became much harder than ever in these years despite the progress of science and technology. Increasing R&D costs and increasing regulatory demands also made R&D tougher. In Japan, drug lag became a prominent issue for the society as well as the patients. In this seminar, emerging issues in promotion of drug discovery and challenges of EFPIA are presented, and the vision for future R&D strategy and healthcare policy is going to be discussed.
In the meantime, I have been developing my carrier working in academic science, pharmaceutical R&D, organizational management, healthcare policy, and leadership development. My carrier was not pre-designed intentionally while I kept putting all my efforts toward the best performance for achievement. Meanwhile, I made a bold decision to re-direct myself to a new challenge when I became believed it worth challenging. I’m sharing my experience with you, and hope my experience would be of help when you think of your carrier.
