Report on the 29th East Asia Joint Symposium

The 29th East Asia Joint Symposium was held at Ramada Encore by Wyndham Cheonan (Cheonan-si, South Korea), on October 24–27, 2023, hosted by Soonchunhyang Institute of Medi-Bio Science, Soonchunhyang University (SIMS). The symposium has been held online since 2019 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year, for the first time in four years (after three symposiums), it was held completely on-site.

Eight researchers from the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo (IMSUT) participated. Each senior researcher gave a 15-minute oral presentation, while young researchers and students made 10-minute presentations of their research results. On the third day, the venue was moved to SIMS, where a poster-viewing session was held by young researchers and student participants, followed by a lively Q&A session. On the second day of the symposium, the "Ken-ichi Arai Award" ceremony was held, and this year's winner, Dr Jong-seok Moon (Associate Professor, SIMS) gave a commemorative lecture.

As a token of appreciation, at the end of the symposium, the "Lifetime Award" was presented to Prof. Jeongbin Yim, who laid the foundation of the East Asia Symposium together with the late Prof. Emeritus Kenichi Arai.

As this was the first face-to-face meeting in a long time, there was a lively exchange between the young researchers and the student participants, which made the event very meaningful.

Next year, the host institute of the symposium will be Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, National Taiwan University.

Report on the 28th East Asia Joint Symposium

The 28th East Asia Joint Symposium was held in an online format from October 26-28, 2022, hosted by Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies, ShanghaiTech University (SIAIS, China), under the theme of "Fighting Diseases: Challenges and Opportunities for Life Sciences".

A total of 8 researchers participated from IMSUT. PI presenters each gave a 15-minute oral presentation after which questions-and-answers were actively exchanged. Regarding the Young Scientist/Student session, each presenter gave a 10-minute short talk, and poster discussions were conducted.

Furthermore, at the end of the symposium, a commemorative lecture was given by Dr. Katsuhiko Mikoshiba from SIAIS, who was the winner of this year's "Ken-ichi Arai Award" which was newly established as of the 26th EAJS. Professor Mikoshiba is a former professor at IMSUT, and is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, and is a researcher with deep ties to IMSUT.

Dr. Tomoya Hayashi, a participant in the young scientist session from IMSUT, received the "Best Poster Award (young scientist)" for his presentation titled “Comprehensive mapping of extracellular nanoparticles by high-resolution flow cytometry”.

Next year, the 29th EAJS will be hosted by Soonchunhyang Institute of Medi-bio Science, Soonchunhyang University (SIMS, Korea).

Report on the 27th East Asia Joint Symposium

The 27th East Asia Joint Symposium was held from October 27-29, 2021 hosted by IMSUT. This year's theme was "~Reboot 2021: Exploring Life Science in the Post-Pandemic Era~".

A total of 8 researchers participated from IMSUT. PI presenters each gave a 12-minute oral presentation and questions-and-answers were actively exchanged. Regarding the Young Scientist/Student session, each presenter gave an 8-minute short talk and poster discussions were conducted. In this Young Scientist/Student session, the short talk session was organized, managed and chaired by the representatives selected from among the participants from the each of young scientist/student participants. With regard to the poster discussion, all participants including audience members were able to actively discuss and exchange opinions by setting up an e-poster exhibition site that could be viewed online in advance.

Furthermore, at the end of the symposium, a commemorative lecture was given by Dr. Hideaki Morishita from Juntendo University, who was the winner of this year's "Ken-ichi Arai Award" which was newly established from the 26th EAJS.

Dr. Yu Ishikawa-Yamauchi, a participant in the young scientist session from IMSUT, received the "Best Presenter Award (young scientist)" for her presentation titled “Age-associated alteration of female reproductive morphology and fertility in mice”.

Next year, the 28th EAJS will be hosted by ShanghiTech University.
