IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award

The IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award is to be presented to a young investigator of IMSUT who has made a significant contribution to the progress in basic and clinical research, social implementation of medical science research, or the dissemination of cutting-edge medical therapies.  The award was founded with the aim to communicate our activities to the public, to encourage the young investigators of IMSUT to pursue basic and clinical research, and to promote their contribution to society.

Winner of the IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award 2023

In July 2023, IMSUT announced that recipients of the IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award 2023 were Dr. Makoto Saito, Division of Infectious Diseases, Advanced Clinical Research Center, and Dr. Toshihiro Kobayashi, Division of Mammalian Embryology, Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.
The reason for the award to Dr. Saito is that he has made a significant contribution to the development of infectious disease epidemiology by conducting international epidemiological research on antimalarial drug therapy while actively engaged in medical practice, with results leading to the establishment of more effective treatments.
The reason for the award to Dr. Kobayashi is that he has made a significant contribution to the elucidation of the mechanisms of early embryonic development and their application in regenerative medicine, including the successful production of fetal rat germ cells that can produce viable offspring.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Saito and Dr. Kobayashi on their research achievements and wish them every success in their future studies.

Winner of the IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award 2022

In July 2022, IMSUT announced that recipients of the IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award 2022 were Dr. Yusuke Inoue, Department of Public Policy, Human Genome Center, and Dr. Akihisa Kato, Division of Molecular Virology, Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
The reason for the award to Dr. Inoue is that he conducts research on various ethical, legal, and social issues in the clinical environment and general society. He has made a major contribution to sound development and promotion of life sciences by establishing bioethics and making recommendations for the development of guidelines and legislation.
The reason for the award to Dr. Kato is that he has devoted his research career to the study of herpesviruses. He has made a significantly contribution to the elucidation of viral proliferation and pathological expression mechanisms in herpesvirus, including the discovery of the importance of a TLR3-mTORC2 axis in the brain’s defence against infections.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Inoue and Dr. Kato on their research achievements and wish them every success in their future studies.

Winner of the IMSUT Outstanding Young Investigator Award 2021

In July 2021, IMSUT announced that the first recipient of the IMSUT Outstanding Young Award was Dr. Kei Sato in the Division of Systems Virology of the International Research Center for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Sato focused not only on virus research but also on the virus-host interaction and promoted novel approaches to the elucidation of the retroviral mechanisms including its origin, evolution, mutualism, and virus-host coevolution. In recognition of his unique research and contribution to the establishment of a new interdisciplinary field “Systems Virology”, Dr. Sato was presented with the Award.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Sato on his research achievements and wish him every success in his future studies.
