Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science & Technology
Establishment of a life science research network in Asia

Implementation of an International Research Collaboration within the context of the Strategic Promotion of Scientific and Technological Cooperation with Asia and Africa
"Collaborative Research for Resolving Shared Regional Issues Based on Advanced Technology"
Principal Investigator: Hiroshi Kiyono (Dean, IMSUT)

The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo (IMSUT) has been at the centre and forefront of forging mutually beneficial networks of researcher-level communication in science across Asia. To further stimulate these activities in depth and width as well, we came to propose and launched this project which aims to create the new research field "New generation vaccine/regenerative medicine cross-boundary science"

This project will not only integrate research groups from various Asian countries into IMSUT's distinctive cutting-edge research that cuts across research field boundaries, but develop research cooperation that leverages the respective needs and strengths of each group. Specifically, with the development of oral vaccines and their scientific underpinnings at the centre, we will proceed with ongoing coordination on several projects of mutual interest.

These days the need for cooperation with various Asian countries is receiving strong vocal support. While such activities as collaborative research between individual laboratories and technology transfer through the training of scientists from overseas can be seen as definite signs of progress, efforts to forge a community network with Japan at the hub of a wider Asia remain as rare as ever. To promote highly effective research collaboration exchanging the latest research findings across Asia and communicate these to the world, constructing such an Asian research network open to the world is an extremely important task.

To this end, we are pleased to join hands with the two prestigious organizations: Asia-Pacific International Molecular Biology Network (A-IMBN) and the Nature Publishing Group (NPG). A-IMBN has been up and running since 1997 to promote the development of research in molecular biology and biotechnology in the region and beyond through greater networking and interaction of scientists in the Asia-Pacific for the benefit of mankind. NPG as a core information transmission and exchange medium with its powerful global science media network will help us bring to the world’s attention the best research in medical life science from Asia and together manage the website "A-IMBN Research", which is to construct a new community strategically linking wider Asia into a network with Japan at its centre.
