The Institute of Medical Science accepts international students/researchers as postdoctoral fellows, graduate students of the University of Tokyo (master/doctor) or IMSUT research students.

Targeted for students who belong to one of the following graduate schools.
●Graduate School of Medicine
●Graduate School of Science
●Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
●Graduate School of Information Science and Technology
●Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences
●Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
●Graduate School of Frontier Sciences
NOTICE: Most of the lectures for regular graduate program of the University of Tokyo are given in Japanese. Therefore, Japanese language should be learned before entering. (Nevertheless, certain graduate schools allow the entrance examination to be taken in English.)
1) Master's Program
Those who meet one of the following requirements can apply for the regular master's program.
1. have graduated or expect to graduate from a 4-year university/college
2. have completed or expect to complete a 16-year curriculum of school education abroad or expect to complete
3. regarded by a graduate school of the University of Tokyo as having completed a 15-year curriculum of school education abroad with excellent results
4. regarded by a graduate school of the University of Tokyo as academically on a par with graduate students or better
2) Doctoral Program
Those who meet one of the following requirements can apply for the regular doctoral program.
1. holds or expects to hold a master's degree
2. holds or expects to be awarded a degree abroad that corresponds to a master's degree
3. regarded by a graduate school of the University of Tokyo as academically on a par with master's degree holders or better
NOTICE: Applicants for the graduate school of medicine (except for the school of health sciences and nursing and school of international health) should meet one of the following requirements.
1. have completed or expect to complete a 6-year curriculum of veterinary medicine at a university
2. have completed or expect to complete a curriculum of medical science or dentistry at a university
3. have completed or expect to complete an 18-year curriculum abroad of which the last course was composed of veterinary, medical science or dentistry
4. regarded by a graduate school of the University of Tokyo as academically on a par with, or better than, 1 or 2 above
1) Master's Program
Those who wish to enroll in a master's program are required to take an entrance examination conducted by the University of Tokyo. Selection of applicants is based on written exams, oral exams, document screening and medical checkups
For master's programs, a master's degree will be granted to those who have attended the school for at least 2 years, studied the subjects and earned the credits specified by each graduate school, and then passed the thesis review and final examination under the necessary academic guidance.
2) Doctoral Program
Those who wish to enroll in a doctor's course are required to take an entrance examination conducted by the University of Tokyo. Selection of applicants is based on written exams, oral exams, document screening and medical checkups..
For the doctoral program, a doctor's degree will be granted to those who have attended the school for at least 3 years, studied the subjects and earned the credits specified by each graduate school, then passed the thesis review and final examinations under the necessary academic guidance. However, certain doctoral courses require a minimum of 4 years' attendance; these include the Graduate School of Medicine (excluding Health Sciences, Nursing Science, and International Health courses) and Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
In principle, all regular courses start in April. For further information, please contact the graduate school you wish to attend.
Master's/Doctoral Program
For application procedures, please contact each graduate school approximately 1 year prior to prospective admission. Documents to be submitted for application to master's or doctoral programs are listed below.
1. application for admission (ask the graduate school for a form)
2. dossier (academic record/transcript from the college/university from which you graduated)
3. letter of recommendation (written by the university president or dean of the department)
4. health certificate based upon a medical physical examination
5. letter of Japanese language proficiency (written by a Japanese teacher or equivalent.)
6. alien registration certificate (only those who already live in Japan)
7. other documents required by a graduate school
