Inauguration Ceremony for the University of Tokyo - Chinese Academy of Sciences Joint Laboratories

●所長開会挨拶
First of all I would like to thank all of you for sparing your busy and precious time to commemorate the opening of University of Tokyo-Chinese Academy of Sciences joint laboratories. I also thank all the people and both Japanese and Chinese governmental organizations who helped us to establish this joint laboratories. As you saw today, we now have two joint laboratories, the Laboratory of Structural Virology and Immunology and the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and Molecular Immunology.
Almost three years ago, just after the SARS outbreak, with the support of both governments, scientists of both countries, including Dr. Zhu Chen and Takehiko Sasazuki who are here today, started discussing the possibility of collaborating on problems involving infectious diseases. This was a beginning. Since then CAS-especially the Institute of Microbiology, headed by Dr. Gao, the Institute of Biophysics, headed by Dr. Rao, and IMSUT-have interacted very actively and have established a tight collaboration and friendship. To further facilitate scientific interaction between the University of Tokyo and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, just a year ago the two institutions signed the Agreement for the Academic Exchange. Based on these activities and with the program provided by MEXT, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan, we have launched these two joint laboratories.
The Institute of Medical Science was established 110 years ago by Shibasaburo Kitasato as an institute with a hospital for dealing with the problems of infectious diseases and thus our institute has a long history of studying infectious diseases. Since then the scope of research at IMSUT has expanded to cancer and other intractable maladies such as autoimmune diseases in addition to infectious diseases. These research activities largely overlap with those in the Institute of Microbiology and the Institute of Biophysics.
In this new age of genome science and post-genome science, we share common strategies in our approach to medical science but these strategies require constant reassessment and polishing. I believe that our collaboration is synergistic in terms of the approaches we each bring to the problem of diseases. And in the very near future I hope these joint laboratories achieve great discoveries, which will facilitate expansion of the scientific collaboration programs between the two countries beyond infection. We share not only the use of Kanji Chinese characters, but also our genetic background. Intimate collaboration would certainly help fight against many diseases most of which are subject to genetic predispositions present in both our populations. IMSUT is always prepared to contribute or to play a key role in collaboration between the two countries.
Finally, I thank all of you for your great support in the past and thank you in advance for your continued and even greater support for the University of Tokyo-Chinese Academy of Sciences joint laboratories. Thank you.
