The Department of Bioethics and Medical Law at the Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo in Japan was established in September 2024.

We studies ethical, social, and legal issues in cutting-edge medical science research and clinical settings.

Specific themes that we are studying are as follows:

• − Examination of ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues) and legal policies in assisted reproductive technology
• − ELSI and research ethics regarding life through cutting-edge artificial technology
  (e.g., ectogenesis)
• − Examination of ELSI and law regarding biobanks and follow-up research
• − Examination of medical and clinical research from a gender perspective
