Eleven young researchers from the China Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (China CDC) visited the Institute of Medical Science, The University
of Tokyo, (IMSUT). This visit was part of the Japan-Asia Youth Exchange
Program in Science (Sakura Science Plan) of the Japan Science and Technology
Agency (JST), and was conducted in cooperation with the National Institute
of Infectious Diseases (NIID). After learning the history of IMSUT from
Prof. Toshio Kitamura in the Medical Science Museum, they received a briefing
on the project China-Japan Research Collaboration on Defense against Emerging
and Reemerging Infections from Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean of IMSUT
and Project Director). Then, they toured a BSL-3 laboratory of the Division
of Virology, and learned its operation system from Associate Prof. Masaki
Imai and Assistant Prof. Kiyoko Iwatsuki-Horimoto. They asked earnest questions
about the infectious diseases currently studied at IMSUT.
