Our purpose is to decipher the design of biological system based on genome information obtained from genome analysis projects of various species including humans. For this purpose, we are promoting the development of medical pathways and pharmaceutical databases in addition to huge genome information, and technology development regarding their usage. The achievements are widely disclosed to the research community.

Due to these post-genomic research progresses, our current mission is to create computational strategy for systems biology and medicine towards translational bioinformatics. With this mission, we have been developing computational methods for understanding life as system and applying them to practical issues in medicine and biology.

Our laboratory is involved in the management of Biobank Japan (BBJ), one of the largest disease biobank in the world, that has approximately 270,000 samples. By using BBJ samples, we conducted comprehensive genomic analysis to identify genetic factors associated with disease risk and various phenotypes for the implementation of personalized medicine. In addition, we are also working on the project for the identification of downstream targets of p53 and genomic analysis of bone and soft tissues tumors to elucidate the molecular mechanism of human carcinogenesis.

We are interested in developing efficient algorithms and software for computational problems in molecular biology. The data in the field has been increasing exponentially (i.e., big data), due to the recent development of technologies. Thus, sophisticated algorithm design and development are almost mandatory. Our recent work includes sequence alignment, sequence database searching, gene finding, analysis of SNPs, pathway analysis, 3-D protein structure database searching, 3-D protein function prediction, and so on.
