研究内容

 
 哺乳類、鳥類、植物、昆虫など地球上の多くの"生き物"は"特定の機能を持つ細胞群"が相互に連絡を取り合いながら集まっている状態と考えることができます。細胞が"特定の機能を持つ細胞群"として働くために、細胞は増殖し、分化します。またある時には、もはや必要のなくなった細胞は、積極的に死んでいきます。このような細胞の増殖、分化、死などはどのように制御されているのでしょうか? 多くの場合、細胞外からのいろいろな情報(シグナル)は、リガンドがリセプターに結合することにより細胞に伝達される。次にシグナルは、リセプターから細胞内部でシグナル伝達に関わる様々なタンパク質を介して伝達され、最終的には増殖、分化、死などに関与するタンパク質を量的あるいは質的に変えることで細胞に変化をもたらします。もしシグナル伝達や遺伝子発現に関わるタンパク質に異常が起きると、シグナルに対する細胞の反応は正しく行われません。このような細胞の異常な状態が癌や免疫疾患などの原因になると考えられています。逆に言うとこれらの疾患に対する治療薬や治療法を考案する際にシグナル伝達や遺伝子発現制御に関する詳細な知識が大いに役立つ訳です。
